You should keep your child in a booster seat until the adult seat belt fits them correctly without the boost. That is usually when your child is around 4 feet and 9 inches tall. Most children fit a standard seat belt when they are 10-12 years old.

When do booster seats expire? Well, it usually depends on the brand you choose, but most booster seats come with a life span of 6-10 years. You need to pay attention to the manufacturer's guidelines to know the expiration date; you can also find it stamped on the seat. Kids should be switched to booster seats when they at least weigh 40 pounds. Even if your child weighs a bit lower but is taller than 57 inches, you should still consider switching to a booster seat.

When your child exceeds the height or weight limit of their forward-facing harnessed car seat, it is generally time for a booster seat.
