Choose The Right Car Seat For Your Child

Car seats are required by law to be installed properly in the backseat when leaving the hospital after a baby is born. Even in the earliest days, baby car seats are necessary for child safety. experts recommend that your child continues to ride in a car seat until at least age 8.

There are many factors to consider when picking your child’s car seat, including your child’s height, weight, and age, safety features, functionality and compatibility with your vehicle and other car seats or accessories that you will be using at the same time.

The NHTSA has put together a helpful guide to understand which type of car seat is best as your child grows. It will help you understand when to transition to toddler car seats, or belt-positioning booster seats.

When preparing for a newborn, most caregivers pick an infant car seat. The infant car seat base stays in the car, and the carrier shell comes off to easily transport your baby to and from the car.

Diono has a selection of LiteClik®30 Infant Car Seats, with safety and comfort features to ensure you find the best fit. Our Quantum® 4 3-in-1 Travel System with LiteClik®30 R SafePlus® Infant Car Seat and Base includes a stroller system for all your on-the-go needs.

For a car seat option that grows with your child from birth to booster, we recommend an all-in-one convertible car seat. Our famous Radian® line converts from rear-facing to forward-facing harness to high-back booster, keeping your child protected at every stage of the journey.

When your child is ready to move on from a convertible car seat, a 2-in-1 high-back booster is a great choice. These car seats convert from high-back to backless booster, offering the perfect transition option for your growing child. Our best-selling Cambria® 2XT is a great choice for a 2-in-1 solution. If you need an option that fits 3-across, check out our innovative Connect3® R 2-in-1 High-Back Booster!

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Seats

Choosing the best protection for your child is important and we understand you may have questions. Here are answers to some of the frequently asked questions:

Rear-facing is the safest way for a baby to ride in their car seat until they reach the maximum height or weight limit for their rear-facing car seat. This often won’t happen until the child is 3 or 4 years old. It’s important to remember that while your child might look uncomfortable rear-facing, their leg are flexible and their safety should be #1 priority. For more information, check out our blog article: Rear-facing, Forward-facing or Booster Mode. When To Switch?

Many experts recommend the middle seat as the safest place to install a car seat. There may be truth to this, but it really depends on where you can get the best installation. If the car seat model you are using requires use of a shoulder belt, the middle seat may not be an option. The safest place to install a car seat will always be the position where you can get a tight and secure installation.

It’s important not to get rid of a booster seat before your child is ready. Most adult vehicle seat belts generally will not fit a child correctly until they are at least 4’9” tall. For more information about when your child may be ready to ride without a booster car seat, check out the five-step test detailed in our blog article here: When can my child travel in a booster seat?
